# Do I Need to Flush My System After Maintenance?
## Yes, flushing after maintenance removes loose particles, sanitizer residue, and ensures your water is clean and ready to use.
### Why Post-Maintenance Flushing Matters
Anytime maintenance is performed on your Crystal Quest water treatment system, flushing is a critical final step. Maintenance activities can introduce carbon fines, loose filter media, trapped air, or residual cleaning solutions into the system. Proper flushing removes these materials and ensures your water is clean, clear, and ready for use.
Skipping or shortening the flush process can result in cloudy water, unusual taste or odor, or reduced system performance.

### Flushing Requirements by Maintenance Type
#### Filter Cartridge Replacement
Replacing filter cartridges introduces fresh media that may release fine particles during initial use. A moderate flush is required to clear these materials.
- **Sediment filters:** Flush for **3-5 minutes** or until water runs clear.
- **Carbon block filters:** Flush for **5-10 minutes** to remove carbon fines.
- **Specialty cartridges (arsenic, nitrate, iron, etc.):** Flush for **5 minutes** or according to the cartridge’s specific instructions.
Flush using cold water only and direct water to a drain or designated faucet.

### Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane Replacement
RO membrane replacement requires more thorough flushing to remove preservative solution and allow the membrane to stabilize. Flushing procedures depend on the type of RO system.
#### Countertop & Under-Sink RO Systems
These systems (excluding countertop systems) use a pressurized storage tank and require tank cycling:
1. Allow the storage tank to fill completely.
2. Drain and discard the **entire first tank** of water.
3. Allow the tank to refill.
4. If taste or odor is present, discard a **second tank**.
Most systems are ready for normal use after one to two full tank flushes.
#### Whole House RO Systems
Whole house RO systems use larger membranes, atmospheric storage tanks, and distribution plumbing. Flushing requirements are more extensive and system-specific.
- Flush distribution lines as instructed during startup
- Discard initial tank volumes as recommended (typically 2 storage tanks full)
- Allow the system time to stabilize before placing it fully back into service
