How Do I Flush My Reverse Osmosis System?
Properly flushing your RO system ensures clean, great-tasting water by conditioning the membrane and activating your filters.
Why RO Systems Require Extra Flushing
Reverse osmosis (RO) systems require more thorough flushing than standard filters for two key reasons:
Membrane Conditioning
The RO membrane is shipped with a food-grade preservative solution to keep it moist during storage. This solution must be fully rinsed away before the water is consumed.
Post-Filter Activation
Carbon or alkalizing post-filters used for taste polishing may contain fine carbon particles that need to be flushed out. Without proper flushing, initial water may appear cloudy or slightly gray.
Step-by-Step RO Flushing Process
Step 1: Initial Tank Fill
After installation, allow the RO storage tank to fill completely. This can take 2–12 hours, depending on water pressure, system size, and membrane rating.
Step 2: First Flush (Discard)
Once the tank is full:
-
Open the RO faucet
-
Drain the entire tank
-
Keep the faucet open until the flow slows to a trickle
-
Close the faucet and allow the tank to refill completely
Step 3: Second Flush (Discard)
After the tank refills:
-
Drain the tank completely a second time
-
Keep the faucet open until flow reduces to a slow drip
-
Close the faucet and allow the tank to refill again
When Is Your Water Ready to Drink?
After two full tank flushes, the system is ready for use.
Quick Reference:
-
Tank 1: Flush and discard
-
Tank 2: Flush and discard
-
Tank 3 and beyond: Ready for drinking and cooking
Important Notes
-
Do not use refrigerator ice makers or water dispensers until flushing is complete.
-
Slight cloudiness during early use is normal and should clear quickly.
-
If taste or cloudiness persists after two flushes, drain one additional tank.
Tips for Best Results
-
Be patient during initial fill cycles, rushing will not improve performance
-
Mark your calendar for future filter replacements to maintain optimal water quality
Following these steps ensures your Crystal Quest RO system delivers clean, great-tasting water from day one.
