Can I Connect My Crystal Quest Under-Sink or RO System to My Refrigerator or Ice Maker?

Yes. You can send Crystal Quest filtered water to a refrigerator, ice maker, or dispenser.

The best way to do it depends on which system you have, and reverse osmosis (RO) has one extra thing to plan for. Crystal Quest has built water filtration systems since 1994, and any of these paths gives you filtered water at the refrigerator. Which one is right comes down to the system you already own and how much filtration you want on that line.


Which Path Fits Your System

  • If you have an under-sink or whole-house cartridge filter (not RO): the filtered water is still at your normal household pressure, so you can run a 1/4 inch line to the refrigerator with a tee fitting and it will feed the fridge and ice maker just like an unfiltered line.
  • If you have a reverse osmosis (RO) system: RO water is stored in a pressurized tank and delivered at a lower pressure than your household plumbing. A refrigerator or ice maker fed directly from an RO tank can dispense slowly or make ice slowly. A permeate pump or a small delivery (booster) pump raises the delivered pressure and solves this. If you want to feed a fridge from an RO system, tell us your model and we will confirm whether your setup needs a pump.
  • The simplest purpose-built option: the Crystal Quest SMART In-Line Water Filter System installs directly on the refrigerator's own cold water line. It is designed for refrigerators, ice makers, and dispensers, uses 1/4 inch quick-connect fittings, and runs at your household pressure, so ice production stays normal. Safety Before You Start

  • Shut off the water supply and relieve pressure before you cut into any line. Open the nearest faucet (or the RO faucet) so the line and, for RO, the storage tank are not under pressure when you open a fitting.
  • Use tubing and fittings rated for potable cold water. Do not connect to a hot water line.
  • Push-connect fittings must be fully seated, and tubing cut square and clean, or they will leak.

How to Tee an Existing Under-Sink or Whole-House Filter (Not RO) Into the Fridge

  1. Identify the filtered-water outlet you will tap (the line running to your filtered faucet, or the filtered cold line).
  2. Shut off the water supply to the system and open the faucet to relieve pressure (see Safety above).
  3. Install a 1/4 inch tee fitting (quick-connect works with copper or plastic tubing) on the filtered-water line.
  4. Run 1/4 inch potable-rated tubing from the tee to the refrigerator's water inlet.
  5. Connect the tubing to the refrigerator's 1/4 inch inlet fitting.
  6. Turn the water back on, check every connection for leaks, and run the dispenser and ice maker until the water runs clear.

How to Feed the Fridge From a Reverse Osmosis (RO) System

  1. Follow the same tee-and-tubing steps above, tapping the RO tank or the line that feeds your RO faucet.
  2. Because RO delivers at a lower pressure, watch how the ice maker and dispenser perform. If ice is slow or small, or the dispenser is weak, add a permeate pump or a small delivery (booster) pump to raise the pressure.

How to Add a Dedicated Refrigerator Filter Instead

  1. Locate the 1/4 inch cold water line that feeds the refrigerator.
  2. Install the Crystal Quest SMART In-Line Water Filter System in that line using its 1/4 inch quick-connect fittings (a 3/8 inch conversion package is available if your line is 3/8 inch).
  3. Flush the new cartridge per its manual before drinking or making ice.
