Cloudy Water After Changing a Water Filter

Why is My Water Cloudy After Installing or Replacing The Water Filter?

Cloudy Water After a Filter Change

Seeing cloudy or milky-looking water after changing your filter can be surprising, but in most cases, this is completely normal and temporary.

Below we’ll explain why this happens, how long it lasts, and what to do next.

Why Is My Water Cloudy After Changing the Filter?

Cloudy water after a filter change is usually caused by harmless air bubbles or carbon fines released during the first flush.

The most common reasons include:

1. Trapped Air in the System (Most Common)

When filters are replaced, air enters the housings and water lines.
As water flows again, that air breaks into tiny bubbles, making the water appear cloudy.

How to check:
Pour a glass of water and let it sit for 1–2 minutes.

  • If the cloudiness clears from bottom to top → it’s air

  • This is normal and safe

2. Carbon Fines From New Filters

New carbon filters can release small carbon particles (called fines) during initial use.

These particles:

  • Are not harmful

  • Do not affect filtration performance

  • Clear with proper flushing

3. Incomplete Flushing After Replacement

Most filtration systems require flushing after a filter change to remove air and loose media.

If flushing was skipped or shortened, temporary cloudiness can occur.

How Long Should Cloudy Water Last?

In normal conditions, cloudiness should clear within:

  • 5–15 minutes for point-of-use filters (pitchers, undersink)

  • 1–24 hours for whole house or RO systems

During this time, the system is stabilizing.

What You Should Do

Follow these steps to clear cloudy water:

Step 1: Flush the System

  • Run cold water continuously for 5–10 minutes

  • For whole house systems, run a bathtub or outdoor spigot

Step 2: Avoid Hot Water

  • Do not run hot water through the system during flushing

  • Use cold water only

Step 3: Let the System Settle

  • After flushing, allow the system to sit for 30–60 minutes

  • Resume normal use afterward

When Cloudy Water Is Not Normal

Contact support if any of the following apply:

  • Cloudiness persists longer than 48 hours

  • Water contains visible particles that do not settle

  • Water has an unusual smell or taste that does not improve

  • Cloudiness increases instead of decreases

  • Filters were installed incorrectly or forcefully

Is Cloudy Water Safe to Drink?

  • Yes, when caused by air bubbles or carbon fines

  • No, if the water contains debris, oily residue, or strong odors

If you’re unsure, flush the system again or contact support.

Quick Summary

  • Cloudy water after a filter change is usually normal

  • Most cases are caused by air bubbles or carbon fines

  • Proper flushing resolves the issue quickly

  • Persistent cloudiness may indicate improper installation
