How Do I Set Up My Countertop Reverse Osmosis System?
Remove the red shipping cap from the system connection where it is installed, fit the diverter to your faucet, and let the separate drain line discharge into the sink while the system runs.
A countertop reverse osmosis (RO) system is different from a plain countertop filter: RO separates your water into filtered water and rinse water that has to leave the system through the drain line and flow restrictor. Remove the shipping cap before startup, but do not describe it as the drain-line cap until a current packing photo confirms the exact port.
What Is Normal for This System
Two things are worth knowing up front, because they are normal and are not faults:
- This system is intentionally slow. It is rated up to 100 gallons per day, but at the standard pressure of a residential kitchen faucet it produces about 25 gallons per day (about 0.02 gallons per minute on demand). Reaching the full 100 gallons per day rating takes roughly 60 psi of incoming pressure. You collect water into a pitcher or container rather than drawing a fast stream on demand.
- It needs pressure. The system needs at least 45 to 60 psi to operate, with water between 40 and 85 degrees F.

Safety Before You Start
- Use cold water only. Hot water can damage the cartridges.
- Do not drink the water until you have flushed the system as described below.
- Cut nothing and solder nothing. This system requires no plumbing. If your faucet threads are damaged or the diverter will not seat, stop and contact us rather than forcing it.
- Keep the unit on a flat, stable part of the counter where it cannot be knocked into the sink, and where the tubing reaches without kinking or stretching.
- Make sure the drain line can discharge into the sink and is not submerged, pinched, or taped shut.
- If you soak the membrane or the diverter in a vinegar and water solution, rinse thoroughly before using the system again.
How to Set Up the System, Step by Step
- Remove the red shipping caps. Countertop reverse osmosis systems ship with red caps in the outlets to keep the unit sealed in transit. Take these out before you connect anything. The system will not run correctly with a shipping cap still seated.
- Remove the aerator from your faucet if unthreaded. Unscrew it counterclockwise and keep it somewhere safe. You will need it if you ever move the system.
- Determine whether you need an adapter. Your system ships with gasket adapters in more than one size. Inspect your faucet threads, then choose the adapter that fits.
- Attach the diverter to the faucet. Seat the gasket, then thread the diverter onto the faucet's outside threads and turn until tight.
- Clamp the unit hose to the faucet. Use the large clamp to tighten the unit hose to the faucet.
- Place the unit and seat the spout. Set the filter in the location you want on the countertop, then insert the spout into the spout housing and push it down firmly. The unit measures approximately 16 inches by 7 inches by 7 inches, so allow clearance above it for changing cartridges later.
- Position the drain line. Route the drain line so it discharges into the sink. RO produces rinse water continuously while it runs, and this line is how it leaves the system.
- Run the system and flush it before drinking. Turn on the cold water, engage the diverter, and let the system run. Flush it before you drink from it or use it for ice. Water may look slightly cloudy at first as the cartridges clear.
- Collect the filtered water. Use a pitcher or container to accumulate water for storage and use. There is no storage tank on this system, which is why it is best suited to individual consumption, offices, apartments, RVs, and backup use rather than as a high-volume family driver.
If It Is Still Slow or Not Producing
Work through these in order, cheapest first:
- Confirm the red shipping cap is off and the separate drain line is open and discharging into the sink.
- Check your water temperature. Very low water temperature causes flow through the membrane to slow or stop. Wait for the temperature to rise, then retest.
- Check your pressure. Below 45 psi the system will underperform. Production scales with pressure, and the 100 gallons per day rating assumes roughly 60 psi.
- Consider hardness scaling on the membrane. In feed water with high hardness, a crystallized layer can form around the membrane and make water flow improperly. Soaking the membrane in a vinegar and water solution for 2 to 3 hours cleans it. Rinse it thoroughly before using.
- Consider exhausted cartridges. Exhausted cartridges clog. If the steps above do not bring results, the cartridges should be replaced. Changes in taste, odor, and flow are the signals that a cartridge is spent.
Ongoing care: soak the diverter in a vinegar and water solution once a month. This clears deposits from the feed water and helps prevent corrosion of the internal diverter mechanism. Use only factory approved Crystal Quest cartridges, and do not modify the unit.
