What to Expect on Day One with an Under-Sink or Countertop RO System.
Your new undersink reverse osmosis filtration system may need time to fill and stabilize before delivering optimal filtered water.
Understanding Your First Day
Congratulations on your new water treatment system! While it begins working immediately, the first day may require a bit of patience. Your reverse osmosis (RO) water storage tank will need time to fill completely, and the system benefits from an initial flush period to ensure the best water quality.
RO Tank Filling Time
Your RO storage tank does not fill instantly. Depending on your water pressure and system model, expect the following:
- Standard fill time: 2 to 4 hours for a complete tank
- Low water pressure homes: May take up to 6 hours
- Tank capacity: Most systems hold 2 to 3 gallons when full
Avoid draining the tank completely during this initial period. Drawing water faster than the system can produce it will result in reduced flow and pressure at the faucet.
When to Use Filtered vs. Unfiltered Water
First Few Hours
During the initial fill cycle, we recommend using your regular tap water for high-volume tasks such as:
- Cooking large meals
- Filling pots for boiling
- Watering plants
- Cleaning and washing
After the Tank Fills
Once your tank has completed its first full cycle, you can begin using filtered water for drinking, coffee, tea, ice cubes, and food preparation. The system will maintain a steady supply as long as usage remains moderate.
Day One Best Practices
- Let the tank fill completely before heavy use
- Run 2 to 3 gallons through the system initially to flush carbon fines
- Check for leaks at all connection points during the first few hours
- Avoid back-to-back large draws that empty the tank repeatedly
By the end of day one, your system will be fully operational and ready to deliver clean, great-tasting water on demand.
