The Two Decisions: Injection Point and Trigger Method
The general approach our technicians walk customers through:
- For the injection point, add a tee fitting into the main water line at the point your system design calls for, and connect the injection valve there. In a typical setup the injection point goes upstream of the equipment it is meant to protect or treat (for example, ahead of a softener), but the correct location depends on what the dosing is for, so confirm it against your system's instructions.
- For power and triggering, you have two common methods. Wire the dosing pump into the system controller so it runs on the controller's logic, or use a piggyback-style flow switch so the pump only runs when water is actually flowing. The flow-switch method is a simple way to make sure the pump is not dosing into a static, no-flow line.
Safety Before You Start

Depressurize the line before cutting in or installing the tee and injection valve. Turn off the feed water and open a downstream faucet first.
- Any line voltage wiring (to a controller or a switched outlet) should be done by a qualified person and follow local code. If you are not comfortable with the electrical portion, use a licensed professional.
- Handle and store any dosing solution per its own safety data sheet, including ventilation, gloves, and eye protection as that product requires.
- Do not run a dosing pump into a no-flow line, to avoid damage or burnt motors. Use the controller logic or a flow switch so dosing only happens during flow.
How to Install the Injection Point and Power the Pump
- Confirm what the dosing is for and where your system design places the injection point (in most cases dosing will go before any filtration stages). This determines whether the tee goes ahead of or after other equipment. If you are unsure, contact us with your system model before you cut into the line.
- Shut off the feed water and relieve pressure at a downstream faucet so the line is depressurized before you open it.
- Install a tee fitting into the main water line at the planned injection location, then connect the injection valve to the tee. Orient the injection valve per its instructions so it injects into the flow, not against a closed section.
- Mount the dosing pump on a stable surface near the injection point and the solution tank, within reach of the suction and discharge tubing and a power source. Keep the pump above the solution level only if its instructions call for it; otherwise follow the pump's mounting guidance.
- Choose your trigger method:

- Controller: wire the dosing pump into the system controller so it runs on the controller's logic.
- Flow switch: use a piggyback-style flow switch so the pump runs only when water is flowing.
- Route and connect the suction tubing from the solution tank to the pump, and the discharge tubing from the pump to the injection valve. Prime the pump per its instructions.
- Restore water, check every new joint and fitting for leaks under pressure, and confirm the pump cycles only when water is flowing (not into a static line).
- Verify and set the dose rate to your target. If you do not have a confirmed dose rate for your application, contact us before running the system in service.
