How Do I Choose the Right Replacement RO Membrane?
Learn how to quickly identify the correct size, GPD rating, and compatibility for your Crystal Quest reverse osmosis system.
Replacing your reverse osmosis membrane is simple once you match three things:
-
Physical size (diameter × length)
-
GPD production rating
-
Water type (freshwater, brackish, or seawater/desalination)
If these match your original membrane, your replacement will fit properly and perform as designed.
Step 1 - Identify Your Membrane Size
Undersink RO / Residential RO Membranes

All Crystal Quest undersink and countertop RO systems use:
1.75" × 11.75" (commonly called 1812/2012 style)
Available in:
100 GPD is the standard membrane size for all Crystal Quest undersink Thunder RO systems.
Residential Whole House RO Membranes & Light Commercial Membranes

Crystal Quest whole house and commercial systems use standard membrane elements in all RO systems:
Always replace with the exact same size specified for your system.
Using the wrong dimensions can prevent proper sealing and may cause leaks or reduced performance.
You can confirm your size on your system’s product page under the Parts & Components section or by checking the label on your existing membrane.
Step 2 - Match the GPD Rating (Undersink Systems Only)
What GPD Means
GPD (Gallons Per Day) indicates how much purified water the membrane can produce under ideal conditions.
Typical undersink RO options:
-
50 GPD → small households
-
75 GPD → average homes (most common)
-
100 GPD → higher demand or faster tank refill (standard size for Crystal Quest undersink RO systems)
Whole House Systems Note
Whole house and commercial RO systems are not sized by GPD per membrane.
Instead, they are sized by:
-
membrane physical size, and
-
number of membranes installed
For these systems, always match the same size and quantity, not a GPD rating.
Step 3 - Match Your Water Type
Choose the Correct Membrane Type
Using the wrong membrane type can shorten lifespan and reduce filtration efficiency.
Select based on your source water:
-
Freshwater → municipal or standard well water (most homes)
-
Brackish → high TDS wells or mineral-heavy groundwater
-
Seawater/Desalination → ocean or extremely high salinity
Most residential systems use low-energy freshwater membranes.
Quick Selection Guide
| System Type | Membrane Size | Water Type |
|---|---|---|
| Undersink / Countertop | 1.75" × 11.75" | Freshwater |
| 300 GPD Whole House | 2.5" × 14" | Freshwater |
| 400–1,000 GPD Whole House | 2.5" × 21" | Freshwater |
| 750–2,500 GPD Whole House | 2.5" x 40" | Freshwater / Brackish / Desal |
| 1,800–7,000+ GPD Whole House | 4" × 40" | Freshwater / Brackish / Desal |
| Industrial / Large Commercial | 4" x 40", 8" × 40", + | Fresh / Brackish / Desal |
