How Do I Install a Countertop Water Filter?
A step-by-step guide to setting up your Crystal Quest countertop filtration system in minutes.
What You'll Need Before You Begin
Installing your Crystal Quest countertop water filter is a straightforward process that requires no plumbing expertise or special tools. Before you start, gather the following items included with your system:
- Countertop filter unit
- Faucet diverter valve
- Tubing (inlet and outlet)
- Faucet adapter washers (various sizes)
You may also want to have a clean towel nearby to catch any water drips during installation.
Connecting the Faucet Diverter
The faucet diverter valve is the key component that directs water from your existing faucet to your filtration system. Follow these steps for a secure connection:
Removing Your Faucet Aerator
- Unscrew the aerator from the end of your kitchen faucet by turning it counterclockwise.
- Set the aerator aside in a safe place, you may need it if you relocate the filter system later.
- Inspect the faucet threads to ensure they are clean and free of debris.
Attaching the Diverter Valve
- Select the appropriate adapter washer that fits your faucet threads. Most standard faucets use the medium-sized washer.
- Insert the washer into the diverter valve connection.
- Thread the diverter valve onto your faucet by turning it clockwise until hand-tight.
- Turn on the water briefly to check for leaks. If water seeps around the connection, tighten slightly or try a different adapter washer.
Note: The diverter valve features a lever that allows you to switch between regular tap water flow and filtered water. When the lever is in the "off" position, water flows normally from your faucet.
Positioning Your Countertop Unit
Proper placement of your filtration system ensures optimal performance and convenience. Consider these guidelines when choosing a location:
- Proximity to faucet: Position the unit close enough to your faucet that the tubing reaches comfortably without kinking or stretching.
- Stable surface: Place the filter on a flat, stable section of your countertop where it won't be easily knocked over.
- Clearance: Ensure adequate space above the unit for replacing filter cartridges when needed.
- Spout accessibility: The filtered water spout should be positioned for easy access when filling glasses, pitchers, or cookware.
Connecting the Tubing
- Connect the inlet tubing from the diverter valve to the inlet port on your filter unit (marked "IN"), if not already installed in place.
- Ensure the filtered water spout or outlet tubing is properly secured to the outlet port (marked "OUT"), if not already in place.
- Check that all connections are snug to prevent leaks during operation.
First-Use Flushing Procedure
Before using your new countertop filter for drinking water, it's essential to flush the system. This process removes any carbon fines and manufacturing residue from the filter cartridges.
- Turn on your cold water faucet to a moderate flow.
- Engage the diverter valve lever to direct water through the filtration system.
- Allow water to run through the filter for 5 to 10 minutes.
- The water may appear slightly gray or cloudy at first, this is normal and indicates carbon fines being flushed out.
- Continue flushing until the water runs completely clear.
Important: Do not drink the water during the flushing process. Once the water runs clear, your system is ready to provide clean, filtered water for your household.
Tips for Optimal Performance
- Use cold water only: Hot water can damage filter cartridges and reduce their effectiveness.
- Monitor flow rate: A significant decrease in water flow indicates it may be time to replace your filter cartridge.
- Regular maintenance: Replace filter cartridges according to the recommended schedule for your specific model.
- Keep it clean: Wipe down the exterior of your unit periodically to maintain its appearance.
