The drain saddle connects the RO system’s drain line to your sink’s drainpipe. It allows wastewater generated during the RO process to exit the system safely and continuously.

Without a correctly installed drain saddle:

Wastewater cannot discharge properly
The RO membrane will not function as intended
The system may back up, leak, or shut down

Think of the drain saddle as the system’s exhaust outlet—simple, but essential.

Choosing the Right Location

Correct placement is the most important factor in a trouble-free drain saddle installation.

Install Above the P-Trap

Always install the drain saddle above the P-trap (the curved section of pipe under the sink). This location ensures proper drainage and helps prevent sewer odors from entering the cabinet area.

Garbage Disposal Considerations

If your sink has a garbage disposal:

Use the disposal’s dedicated RO drain port if one is available, or
Install the drain saddle on the drainpipe between the disposal and the P-trap
Avoid placing the saddle directly at the disposal outlet, where food debris buildup is more likely

Best Placement Practices

A vertical section of drainpipe is preferred
If installing on a horizontal section, mount on the side or top of the pipe, never the bottom
Keep at least 2 inches of clearance from other fittings
Ensure the RO drain tubing can slope continuously downward to the saddle

Step-by-Step Drain Saddle Installation

Step 1: Prepare the Area

Clear the cabinet under the sink
Place a towel or tray beneath the drainpipe
Clean the outside of the drainpipe where the saddle will be installed

Step 2: Position the Drain Saddle

Hold the drain saddle against the selected section of drainpipe
Ensure the opening aligns squarely with the pipe surface
Mark the center of the saddle opening for reference

Step 3: Clamp the Saddle in Place (Before Drilling)

Apply the foam or rubber gasket to the saddle half with the drain opening
Position both saddle halves around the pipe
Tighten the mounting screws evenly and gradually
Snug is sufficient - do not overtighten, as this can crack plastic pipe or deform the gasket

Important: The saddle should be fully secured before drilling. This ensures perfect alignment between the hole and gasket, reducing the risk of leaks.

Step 4: Drill the Drain Hole

Put on safety glasses
Using the drill, carefully drill through the saddle opening and into the drainpipe
Drill through one side of the pipe only
Do not drill through the opposite wall of the pipe
Remove any loose shavings and wipe the area clean

Step 5: Connect the RO Drain Tubing

Insert the RO drain tubing into the drain saddle fitting
Secure the tubing using the provided compression or quick-connect fitting
Confirm the tubing runs downhill continuously from the RO system to the saddle with no dips or loops

The drain saddle itself does not create an air gap
