How Do I Install Prefilters and Postfilters?

Learn proper placement and connection methods for prefilters and postfilters to maximize your water treatment system's performance and longevity.

Understanding Prefilters and Postfilters

Prefilters and postfilters play essential roles in your whole house water treatment system. Understanding what each filter does will help you install them correctly and get the best results from your Crystal Quest system.

What Prefilters Do

Prefilters are installed before your main water treatment unit. Their primary job is to remove larger contaminants such as sediment, sand, rust, and debris before water enters your primary filtration system. By capturing these particles first, prefilters protect your main system from premature wear and clogging, extending its lifespan and maintaining optimal performance.

What Postfilters Do

Postfilters are installed after your main water treatment unit. They provide a final polishing stage that removes any remaining fine particles, improves taste and odor, and ensures the highest quality water is delivered throughout your home. Postfilters often contain activated carbon or other specialty media designed to address specific water quality concerns.

When to Use Each Filter Type

In many applications, using both prefilters and postfilters is considered best practice for protecting equipment and improving water quality, and come standard with all Crystal Quest whole house filters. If you are trying to determine the right combination of filters for more specific use cases. Here are some common scenarios:

When to Use a Prefilter

  • Well water sources: Well water often contains high levels of sediment, sand, and particulate matter that should be removed before reaching your main system.
  • Older plumbing systems: Homes with aging pipes may have rust, scale, or debris that can damage filtration equipment.
  • High sediment municipal water: Some municipal supplies contain visible particles, especially after water main repairs or during seasonal changes.
  • Protecting expensive equipment: Water softeners, UV systems, and reverse osmosis units all benefit from prefilter protection.

When to Use a Postfilter

  • Taste and odor improvement: Carbon postfilters excel at removing chlorine taste and other unpleasant flavors.
  • Final polishing: After softening or other treatment, a postfilter ensures crystal-clear water.
  • Removing treatment byproducts: Some treatment processes may release fine particles that a postfilter can capture.
  • Added peace of mind: A final filtration stage provides an extra layer of protection for your family.
  • Enhancing pH / Remineralizing Water: Common in use with reverse osmosis systems, these filters are great for adding back beneficial minerals to your water for improved taste and enhanced alkalinity.

Proper Installation Sequence

Installing your filters in the correct order is critical for optimal system performance. Follow this sequence from your water source to your home:

  1. Main water shut-off valve: Your installation begins after the main shut-off, giving you control of the entire system.
  2. Sediment prefilter: Install your coarsest prefilter first to capture large particles (typically 20-50 micron).
  3. Fine prefilter (if applicable): A secondary prefilter with a finer micron rating (5-10 micron) provides additional protection.
  4. Main water treatment system: Your Crystal Quest whole house system goes here, whether it's a softener, conditioner, or multi-stage filter.
  5. Postfilter: Install your polishing filter after the main system for final water quality refinement.
  6. Distribution to home: Treated water then flows to your household plumbing.

Important Installation Notice This information is provided for general educational purposes only. Plumbing systems, pipe materials, and local codes vary by location and application. Installation procedures may differ depending on system configuration and water conditions. Crystal Quest recommends that whole house filtration components, including prefilters and postfilters, be installed by a licensed plumber or qualified professional. Improper installation may result in leaks, reduced performance, or property damage.

Connection Methods

Proper connections ensure leak-free operation and make future filter changes easier. Follow these guidelines for secure installations.

Threaded Connections

Crystal Quest filter housings use standard NPT (National Pipe Thread) connections. For threaded fittings:

  • Apply 4-5 wraps of PTFE (Teflon) tape to male threads, wrapping in a clockwise direction.
  • Hand-tighten the connection, then use a wrench for an additional quarter to half turn.
  • Avoid over-tightening, which can crack PPL housings or damage threads.
  • Ensure connections are straight to prevent cross-threading.

Push-to-Connect Fittings

Some systems use quick-connect or push-to-connect fittings for easier installation:

  • Cut tubing squarely using a proper tubing cutter for a clean connection.
  • Insert the tubing fully into the fitting until it stops.
  • Give the tubing a gentle tug to confirm it's locked in place.
  • To disconnect, press the release collar while pulling the tubing out.

Compression Fittings

For copper or flexible tubing connections:

  • Slide the compression nut and ferrule onto the tubing before inserting it into the fitting.
  • Hand-tighten the nut, then use a wrench for one to one-and-a-half additional turns.
  • Check for leaks and tighten slightly more if needed, but avoid excessive force.

Installation Best Practices

Following these guidelines will help ensure a successful installation and years of reliable operation.

Before You Begin

  • Always verify local plumbing codes and permitting requirements before beginning any installation.

  • Shut off the main water supply and relieve pressure by opening a faucet.
  • Gather all necessary tools and fittings before starting work.
  • Review all filter housing inlet and outlet markings to ensure proper flow direction.
  • Have towels and a bucket ready to catch any residual water.

During Installation

  • Install filter housings with the inlet and outlet ports oriented correctly (follow the flow direction arrow on the housing).
  • Mount housings securely to prevent vibration and stress on connections.
  • Leave adequate clearance below housings for filter cartridge replacement.
  • Install shut-off valves before and after the filter system for easy maintenance.
  • Consider adding a bypass valve for system maintenance without interrupting water service.

After Installation

  1. Slowly turn on the water supply and check all connections for leaks.
  2. Flush the system according to the filter manufacturer's instructions, typically 5-10 minutes.
  3. Check housing connections again after the system is pressurized.
  4. Record the installation date and set a reminder for filter replacement.

Maintenance Considerations

Proper placement also affects your ongoing maintenance routine. Keep these factors in mind:

  • Accessibility: Install filters where you can easily reach them for cartridge replacement.
  • Visibility: Clear filter housings allow you to monitor sediment buildup without disassembly.
  • Replacement schedule: Prefilters typically need more frequent replacement than postfilters due to their protective role.
  • Pressure monitoring: Consider installing pressure gauges before and after filter housings to monitor for replacement needs.
