How Do I Prepare My Water System Before Vacation?

Simple steps to protect your Crystal Quest system and ensure fresh, clean water when you return home.

Short Vacations (1-2 Weeks)

Good news, if you're heading out for a week or two, your water filtration system requires very minimal preparation. These systems are designed to handle brief periods of inactivity without any special procedures.

What You Need to Do

  • Leave the system connected: There's no need to shut off or disconnect your water treatment equipment for short trips.
  • Keep water supply on: Maintaining normal water pressure helps preserve filter integrity and system seals.
  • RO systems: Your reverse osmosis tank will maintain stored water safely during this period.

When You Return

After a short absence, simply run water through your system for 2-3 minutes before use. This flushes any water that may have been sitting in the lines and ensures you're getting the freshest filtered water possible.

Extended Absences (3+ Weeks)

For longer vacations or seasonal home closures, taking a few extra precautions will protect your investment and ensure optimal water quality when you return. Extended periods of stagnant water can affect taste and potentially promote bacterial growth in storage tanks.

Pre-Departure Shutdown Procedures

  1. Turn off the water supply: Locate the shut-off valve feeding your water treatment system and close it completely. This prevents potential leaks and water damage while you're away.
  2. Relieve system pressure: Open a downstream faucet briefly to release pressure from the filtration system.
  3. For whole-house systems: Consider shutting off the main water supply to your home as an added precaution against leaks.

RO System Considerations

Reverse osmosis systems require special attention during extended absences due to their storage tanks and membrane components.

  • Drain the storage tank: Open the RO faucet and allow the tank to empty completely. Stagnant water in a pressurized tank for weeks can develop off-tastes and odors.
  • Shut off the feed water valve: Close the valve on the cold water line feeding your RO system.
  • Leave the tank valve open: This prevents pressure buildup and allows the tank to remain depressurized.
  • Consider the membrane: For absences longer than 4-6 weeks, the RO membrane may dry out. If this concerns you, consult our technical support team for membrane preservation options.

Returning Home: Startup Procedures

Welcome back! Taking a few minutes to properly restart your water treatment system ensures you'll enjoy clean, great-tasting water right away.

For All Systems

  1. Turn on the water supply: Slowly open the shut-off valve to prevent water hammer and pressure surges.
  2. Check for leaks: Inspect all connections and fittings for any signs of dripping or moisture.
  3. Flush the system: Run water through your filtration system for 5-10 minutes to clear any stagnant water from the lines and filters.

For RO Systems

  1. Open the feed water valve: Allow water to flow into the system.
  2. Close the tank valve initially: Let the system run to waste for 10-15 minutes to flush the membrane and pre-filters.
  3. Open the tank valve: Allow the tank to fill completely (this may take a couple of hours depending on your system).
  4. Discard the first tank: Drain the first full tank of water and allow it to refill before using for drinking.

Post-Return Checklist

  • Verify water tastes fresh and clean
  • Check system pressure gauges (if equipped) for normal readings
  • Note when filters were last replaced and schedule changes if due soon
  • Inspect for any unusual sounds, odors, or discoloration in the water

Additional Tips for Peace of Mind

A little preparation goes a long way in protecting both your water system and your home.

  • Smart shutoff valve: Consider installing a water leak detector smart valve near your filtration system for automated shutoff.
  • Trusted neighbor: Ask someone to check on your home periodically, including a quick visual inspection of your water treatment area.
  • Document your setup: Take photos of valve positions and system settings before making changes, so you can easily restore everything upon return.
  • Professional winterization: If your home will be unheated during winter months, contact us about proper winterization procedures to prevent freeze damage, or read our winterization article.
