How Do I Prime My Undersink Water Filter?
Follow these simple steps to properly prime your new undersink filtration system and ensure clean, great-tasting water from the first glass.
Why Priming Is Essential
Priming your undersink filter removes air pockets, manufacturing residue, and loose carbon fines from new filter cartridges. This process ensures optimal water flow and prevents any initial cloudiness or unusual taste in your filtered water.
What You'll Need
- Access to the cold water supply valve under your sink
- A bucket or container (optional, for collecting initial flush water)
- Dry towels for leak detection
- A timer or clock
Step-by-Step Priming Instructions
Step 1: Check All Connections
Before turning on the water supply, inspect all fittings and connections. Ensure the filter housings are properly seated and hand-tightened. Verify that tubing is fully inserted into quick-connect fittings.
Step 2: Turn On the Water Supply
Slowly open the cold water supply valve. Turning it on gradually helps prevent sudden pressure surges that could dislodge connections or damage new cartridges.
Step 3: Open the Filtered Water Faucet
Turn on your dedicated filter faucet and allow air to escape from the system. You may hear sputtering or see air bubbles initially. This is completely normal and will subside as water fills the filter housings.
Step 4: Inspect for Leaks
While water flows through the system, carefully check all connection points for drips or moisture:
- Filter housing connections
- Inlet and outlet tubing fittings
- Supply valve connection
- Faucet base and connections
Important: If you detect any leaks, turn off the water supply immediately and re-tighten the affected connection before continuing.
Step 5: Flush the System
Allow water to run continuously through the filter faucet. The initial water may appear cloudy or gray due to carbon fines. This is harmless and will clear as you continue flushing.
How Long Should I Flush Before Drinking?
For most Crystal Quest undersink systems, we recommend flushing for 5 to 10 minutes before using the water for drinking or cooking. This timeframe ensures complete removal of loose carbon particles and any residual manufacturing materials.
Pro Tip: Rather than letting water go to waste, collect the flush water and use it for watering plants or household cleaning.
Signs Your Filter Is Properly Primed
- Water flows steadily without sputtering
- No visible cloudiness or discoloration
- All connections remain dry with no leaks
- Water tastes clean and fresh
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Low Water Flow
If water pressure seems weak after priming, check that the supply valve is fully open. Air trapped in the system can also restrict flow temporarily. Allow additional flushing time for air to fully evacuate.
Persistent Cloudiness
If water remains cloudy after 10 minutes of flushing, turn off the system and let it rest for 30 minutes. This allows the cartridges to fully saturate. Resume flushing and the cloudiness should clear.
Ongoing Leaks
Persistent leaks after re-tightening may indicate a damaged O-ring or improperly seated cartridge. Turn off the water supply, remove the housing, inspect all seals, and reassemble carefully.
