How Do I Remove My Countertop Water Filter?

A step-by-step guide to safely disconnecting, draining, and storing your Crystal Quest countertop filtration system.

When You Might Need to Remove Your System

There are several situations where you may need to temporarily or permanently remove your countertop water filter. Understanding these scenarios helps ensure you handle the process correctly.

  • Moving to a new home: Your countertop system is fully portable and can easily move with you to your next residence.
  • Deep cleaning: Periodic removal allows you to clean behind and around the unit, as well as sanitize the exterior housing.
  • Seasonal storage: If you use the system at a vacation property, you may need to store it during off-seasons.
  • Kitchen renovations: Countertop work or faucet replacement may require temporary removal.
  • Troubleshooting: Removing the system can help diagnose connection issues or faucet compatibility problems.

Disconnecting Your Countertop System

Follow these steps to safely disconnect your Crystal Quest countertop filter from your faucet.

Before You Begin

Gather a small towel or cloth to catch any residual water, and locate your original faucet aerator if you plan to restore your faucet to its previous configuration.

Disconnection Steps

  1. Turn off the water flow at the faucet and switch the diverter valve to the filtered water position to release any pressure in the line.
  2. Place a towel beneath the faucet connection area to catch drips.
  3. Unscrew the diverter valve from your faucet by turning it counterclockwise. Most diverter valves can be removed by hand, but you may use a cloth for additional grip if needed.
  4. Once the diverter valve is detached, carefully lift the tubing away from the faucet area.

Draining the Unit

Proper drainage prevents water damage during storage and inhibits bacterial growth inside the system.

  1. Hold the filter unit over a sink or basin.
  2. Tilt the unit in various directions to allow water to drain from the housing and internal chambers.
  3. Disconnect the tubing from the filter housing and allow any remaining water in the lines to drain completely.
  4. Let the diverter valve drain by holding it with the faucet connection facing downward.
  5. Allow all components to air dry for several hours before storage. For thorough drying, leave components out overnight.

Important: Never store a wet filter system in an enclosed space, as moisture can promote mold and bacterial growth.

Restoring Your Original Faucet Aerator

If you removed and saved your original faucet aerator, you can restore your faucet to its previous appearance and function.

  1. Locate your original aerator. This is the small screen attachment that was removed when you first installed the diverter valve.
  2. Check the aerator threads for any debris or mineral buildup. Clean if necessary with white vinegar and a soft brush.
  3. Thread the aerator clockwise onto your faucet by hand until snug.
  4. Turn on the water to test for leaks around the aerator connection.
  5. If you notice any dripping, tighten slightly or check that the rubber washer inside the aerator is properly seated.

If you no longer have your original aerator, replacement aerators are available at most hardware stores. Bring your faucet specifications or the diverter valve to ensure you purchase the correct thread size.

Storage Tips for Your Countertop System

Proper storage extends the life of your system and ensures it is ready for use when you need it again.

Short-Term Storage (Less Than 30 Days)

  • Ensure all components are completely dry before storing.
  • Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep the filter cartridge installed in the housing to protect the filter media.
  • Coil the tubing loosely to prevent kinks or permanent bends.

Long-Term Storage (More Than 30 Days)

  • Remove the filter cartridge from the housing and store it in a sealed plastic bag.
  • Note the installation date and usage duration on the bag for reference when you reinstall.
  • Store the empty housing with the cap loosely in place to allow air circulation.
  • Keep all components together in a box or container to prevent loss of small parts like adapters and washers.
  • Store in a climate-controlled environment when possible, avoiding extreme temperatures.

Note: Filter cartridges stored for extended periods may need replacement upon reinstallation, depending on their age and previous usage. If in doubt, contact our customer support team for guidance on whether your filter is still effective.
