When to Replace Your Shower Filter Cartridge
Knowing when to replace your shower filter cartridge ensures you continue enjoying the benefits of filtered water. Over time, filter media becomes exhausted and loses its effectiveness at removing chlorine, sediment, and other contaminants, making routine maintenance an important part of owning a water filter.
Recommended Replacement Schedule
- Standard usage (1-2 people): Replace every 12-18 months
- Heavy usage (3+ people): Replace closer to the 12-15 month mark
- Very High chlorine or sediment areas: Replace closer to every 12 months
Signs Your Cartridge Needs Replacing
- Noticeable chlorine smell returning to your shower water
- Reduced water pressure or flow rate
- Visible discoloration or sediment buildup on the cartridge
- Dry skin or hair issues returning after showering
- Twelve months have passed since your last replacement
What You Will Need
- New Crystal Quest shower filter cartridge
- Clean towel or cloth
- Adjustable wrench or pliers (optional, for stubborn housings)
Opening the Filter Housing
Before beginning, turn off shower to prevent any unexpected water spray. If your shower filter has been recently used, allow it to cool for a few minutes.
- Grip the front of the filter housing firmly with one hand while holding the base steady with the other.
- Twist the front half of the housing counterclockwise to loosen it. Crystal quest housings are designed for hand-tightening only, allowing easy access.
- If the housing is difficult to turn, wrap a cloth around it for better grip. Use an adjustable wrench only as a last resort, applying gentle pressure to avoid cracking the housing.
- Once loosened, continue unscrewing by hand until the housing separates completely from the mounted portion of the housing.
Tip: Some water may drain out when you open the housing, have a towel ready to catch any drips.
Removing the Old Cartridge
With the housing open, you can now access and remove the spent cartridge.
- Look inside the housing to locate the old cartridge. It should slide out easily.
- Gently pull the cartridge straight out from the housing. If it feels stuck, twist it slightly while pulling.
- Inspect the inside of the housing for any sediment buildup or debris.
- Rinse the housing interior with clean water to remove any loose particles.
- Check the O-ring seal at the top/bottom of the housing. If it appears cracked, flattened, or damaged, replace it before reassembling.
Proper disposal: Used shower filter cartridges can be disposed of in your regular household trash. The filter media is non-toxic and environmentally safe.
Installing the New Cartridge
Your new Crystal Quest cartridge is ready to install right out of the package, no pre-soaking required - although this may be a good choice.
- Remove the new cartridge from its packaging and inspect it for any shipping damage.
- Orient the cartridge however, Crystal Quest shower filter cartridges do not have a designated top/bottom.
- Slide the new cartridge into the housing until it seats fully into place.
- Ensure the O-ring is properly positioned in its respective groove.
- Align the threads on removed housing portion with the mounted half and turn clockwise to tighten.

Flushing After Replacement
Flushing your new cartridge removes any loose carbon fines and prepares the filter for optimal performance.
- Turn the water supply back on slowly.
- Run the shower at full pressure for 2-3 minutes.
- The water may appear slightly gray, black, or cloudy at first, this is normal and indicates loose carbon particles being flushed out.
