How Do I Sanitize My RO Storage Tank?
Keep your water pure and your tank free from bacteria with proper sanitization techniques.
When Should You Sanitize Your Storage Tank?
Regular sanitization is essential for maintaining water quality and protecting your family's health. While your reverse osmosis system does an excellent job of purifying water, the storage tank itself can become a breeding ground for bacteria if not properly maintained.
Annual Maintenance
We recommend sanitizing your RO storage tank at least once per year as part of your routine maintenance schedule. This annual cleaning helps prevent biofilm buildup and ensures your stored water remains fresh and safe.
After Contamination Events
Immediate sanitization is necessary if you experience any of the following:
- A boil water advisory in your area
- Known bacterial contamination of your water supply
- Unusual taste, odor, or discoloration in your RO water
- The system has been unused for an extended period (more than two weeks)
- Flooding or water damage near your RO system
New Installation
Always sanitize your storage tank before first use. Even new tanks can harbor manufacturing residues or contaminants introduced during shipping and handling.
Approved Sanitizing Solutions
Using the correct sanitizing solution is critical for effective disinfection without damaging your tank or leaving harmful residues. The following solutions are approved for RO storage tank sanitization:
Unscented Household Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite)
Standard unscented household bleach containing 5.25% to 8.25% sodium hypochlorite is the most commonly used and readily available sanitizing agent. Do not use bleach with added fragrances, surfactants, or other additives.
Food-Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
A 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide solution offers an alternative for those who prefer to avoid chlorine-based products. This option breaks down into water and oxygen, leaving no chemical residue.
Commercial RO System Sanitizers
Purpose-made sanitizing solutions designed specifically for RO systems are available and provide precise concentrations for optimal disinfection. These products often come with detailed instructions tailored to water treatment equipment.
Step-by-Step Sanitization Process
Follow these steps carefully to thoroughly sanitize your RO storage tank. The entire process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes of active work, plus a waiting period for the sanitizer to work.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before beginning, assemble the following items:
- Approved sanitizing solution
- Clean bucket or container
- Measuring cup or syringe
- Rubber gloves
- Safety glasses
- Towels or rags
- Replacement filters (if performing a complete maintenance service)
Step 2: Shut Off the Water Supply
Turn off the cold water supply valve feeding your RO system. This prevents new water from entering the system during the sanitization process.
Step 3: Depressurize and Drain the Tank
Open the faucet(s) and allow all water to drain from the storage tank. This may take several minutes depending on how full the tank is. Leave the faucet open until the flow stops completely.
Step 4: Remove the Pre-Filters and Membrane
Disconnect and remove the sediment filter, carbon filters, and RO membrane from their housings. These components should be replaced or set aside in a clean location.
Removing them prevents the sanitizing solution from damaging the membrane and ensures the solution reaches the tank directly.
Step 5: Prepare the Sanitizing Solution
For household bleach, mix one to two tablespoons of unscented bleach per gallon of water. If using hydrogen peroxide or a commercial sanitizer, follow the manufacturer's recommended dilution ratio.
Step 6: Introduce the Sanitizer to the System
Pour approximately one cup of the prepared sanitizing solution into the first filter housing (where the first sediment filter was located). Reinstall the empty filter housings without the filter cartridges.
Step 7: Fill the Tank with Sanitizing Solution
Turn on the water supply and allow the system to fill. The sanitizing solution will be carried through the system and into the storage tank. Once the tank is full (water begins to flow from the RO faucet), turn off the faucet.
Step 8: Allow Contact Time
Let the sanitizing solution remain in the tank for a minimum of 30 minutes. For thorough disinfection, especially after contamination events, allow up to two hours of contact time.
Rinsing and Flushing After Sanitization
Proper rinsing is just as important as the sanitization itself. Residual sanitizer left in the system can affect water taste and potentially harm the RO membrane.
Initial Drain
After the contact time has elapsed, open the RO faucet and drain the entire contents of the storage tank. Allow the tank to empty completely.
Install New Filters
With the tank drained, install new pre-filters and reinstall or replace the RO membrane according to your maintenance schedule.
First Rinse Cycle
Turn on the water supply and allow the tank to fill completely. Once full, drain the entire tank through the RO faucet. This first rinse removes the bulk of the sanitizing solution.
Second Rinse Cycle
Repeat the fill and drain process a second time. Two complete rinse cycles are the minimum recommended to ensure all sanitizer residue is removed.
Final Verification
After the second rinse, fill the tank a third time. Before using the water, smell and taste a small sample from the RO faucet. If you detect any chlorine odor or taste, perform an additional rinse cycle. The water should taste clean and fresh with no chemical notes.
Safety Precautions
Working with sanitizing chemicals requires proper safety measures. Please observe the following precautions throughout the sanitization process:
Personal Protective Equipment
- Always wear rubber or nitrile gloves when handling sanitizing solutions
- Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from splashes
- Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes
- Wear old clothing or an apron, as bleach can damage fabrics
Chemical Handling
- Never mix bleach with ammonia, acids, or other household chemicals
- Store sanitizing solutions away from children and pets
- Use only recommended concentrations, stronger is not better
- If sanitizer contacts skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water
- If sanitizer contacts eyes, seek medical attention
System Protection
- Always remove the RO membrane before introducing sanitizer to the system
- Do not use hot water with sanitizing solutions
- Ensure all connections are secure before turning on the water supply
- Have towels ready to catch any drips or spills
