How Much Space Do I Need to Install My Water Filter?

Understanding the space requirements for different water filtration systems ensures a smooth installation and easy long-term maintenance.

Undersink Filtration Systems

Undersink systems are designed to fit inside standard kitchen cabinets, but proper planning ensures optimal performance and accessibility.

Minimum Space Requirements

  • Height: Undersink systems measure ~14", allow 15-20 inches (including clearance height)
  • Width: ~5-15 inches depending on the number of filter stages, each stage adds ~5 inches.
  • Depth: Undersink systems measure ~5", consider in front or behind the system

Maintenance Clearance

Allow adequate room around the system/housings for cartridge replacement. You should be able to comfortably unscrew the sump/housing to slide out the filter without difficulty.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems

Reverse osmosis (RO) systems require additional cabinet space compared to standard filtration systems due to the inclusion of multiple filtration stages and a dedicated storage tank.

Minimum Space Requirements

  • RO System Assembly W/ Pre Filters: 16" wide from a front view x 8 inches of depth x 21" tall
  • Storage Tank: Approximately 11 inches diameter, 15 inches tall
  • Minimum Cabinet Footprint: Plan for at least 18" wide × 18" deep (if components are offset, not side-by-side)

Drain Line Access

RO systems produce wastewater that must be routed to a drain. Ensure your installation location has accessible drainage within 6 feet of the system.

Whole House Filtration Systems

These larger systems are typically installed in utility areas, basements, or garages near your main water line.

Minimum Space Requirements

Residential whole house water filtration systems in 1.5 and 2.0 cubic foot sizes occupy:

  • 1.5 Cubic Ft. Systems: 10 inches at the widest point, 54 inches tall
  • 2.0 Cubic Ft. Systems: 12 inches at the widest point, 54 inches tall
  • Floor Space: Allow at minimum a 1.5-foot by 1.5 ft. area for the tank to occupy

These measurements do not include pre or post filters, this is for the tank only.

Maintenance Clearance

Provide at least 12-24 inches of clearance in front of the system for filter changes and servicing. Side clearance of 6-12 inches aids inspection and repairs.

Ventilation Considerations

While most whole house systems do not generate heat, adequate air circulation helps prevent moisture buildup. Avoid installing in completely enclosed spaces without some airflow. If your system includes UV disinfection, ensure the area stays below 100°F for optimal lamp performance.

Pre/Post Filters

Provide additional clearance space or considerations for the systems pre and post filters. Pre and post filters come in three different sizes:

  • 2-7/8“x20” - Commonly referred to as 2.5"x10" mini whole house filters
  • 4-5/8“x9-3/4” - Commonly referred to as 5"x10" compact whole house filters
  • 4-5/8”x20” - Commonly referred to as 5"x20" big blue whole house filters

Countertop Systems

Countertop filters offer the most flexible placement options with minimal space requirements.

Minimum Space Requirements

  • Footprint: 5-16.5" inches wide (5" per stage for polypropolene systems and ~5.5" for stainless steel), ~6 inches deep
  • Height: 13-14 inches (ensure clearance under upper cabinets)
  • Faucet Proximity: Within 3-4 feet of your kitchen faucet for diverter connection

Placement Tips

Position your countertop system on a stable, level surface away from heat sources like stovetops. Ensure the diverter hose can reach without kinking or stretching.

General Installation Tips

  • Measure twice: Always measure your available space before purchasing
  • Check product specifications: Refer to your specific model's installation guide or product listing for exact dimensions
  • Plan for the future: Leave extra room if you may add components like UV sterilizers later
  • Accessibility matters: Choose a location where you can comfortably reach the system for filter changes every 6-12 months
