How Often Should I Replace My Undersink RO System Filters?

We recommend replacing all undersink RO components together every 18-36 months, with 24 months being average for most households.

The Complete System Approach

Undersink reverse osmosis systems have multiple filtration stages working together: pre-filters, the RO membrane, and post-filters. While each component has its own lifespan, we recommend replacing everything at once for simplicity and optimal performance.

Replacing all components together ensures your entire system is refreshed, eliminates the need to track multiple replacement dates, and provides peace of mind that every stage is performing at its best.

Recommended Replacement Schedule

  • Complete system cartridge replacement: 18-36 months depending on feedwater conditions
  • Average replacement period: 24 months for the average use case, depending on water quality

This includes:

Understanding Each Component

Pre-Filters (2.5" x 10" Cartridges)

Your RO system's pre-filters protect the membrane from sediment and chlorine damage. These are standard 2.5" x 10" cartridges:

  • Ultrafiltration UF Filter Membrane: Removes particles that could clog or damage the membrane
  • Carbon block pre-filter: Removes chlorine, which degrades RO membranes over time
  • SMART pre-filter: Removes organic contaminants, chloramine, and other impurities that can impact your RO membrane performance over time
  • Individual lifespan: 18-36 months (same as the complete system recommendation)

Voyager Inline Filters

These compact, horizontal inline filters (sometimes called "hotdog" style due to their shape) serve primarily as post-filters, polishing the water after it passes through the membrane.

  • Capacity: 1,500-2,500 gallons
  • Average capacity: 2,000 gallons
  • For most households: This aligns with the 18-36 month replacement cycle

Voyager inline filters are not traditional cartridges, they're complete sealed filter units that are replaced as a whole.

RO Membrane

The membrane is the core of your RO system, removing dissolved contaminants through the reverse osmosis process.

  • Typical standalone lifespan: 2-4 years
  • When replacing with full system: Every 24 months on average ensures optimal performance and contaminant removal

While membranes can last longer than 24 months, replacing them with the rest of the system ensures consistent water quality and simplifies maintenance tracking.

Why Replace Everything Together?

There are several advantages to the complete replacement approach:

  • Simplified tracking: One replacement date to remember instead of multiple schedules
  • Consistent performance: All components are fresh and working at peak efficiency
  • Membrane protection: New pre-filters ensure the membrane isn't exposed to chlorine or sediment
  • Better taste: Fresh post-filters provide optimal polishing
  • Cost efficiency: Bundled replacement kits often provide better value

Factors Affecting Replacement Timing

Replace Closer to 18 Months If:

  • Your household uses large quantities of RO water
  • Source water has high chlorine or sediment levels
  • TDS readings are rising noticeably
  • Water taste or quality has declined

May Extend Toward 36 Months If:

  • Light water usage (1-2 people)
  • Good source water quality
  • TDS readings remain consistently low
  • No changes in taste or flow rate

Signs It's Time for Replacement

  • Rising TDS: Use a TDS meter to monitor, readings increasing over time indicate membrane decline
  • Slower production: Tank takes noticeably longer to fill
  • Taste changes: Return of off-flavors or flat taste
  • Reduced flow: Weak stream from the RO faucet even with a full tank
  • Time elapsed: Approaching 36 months regardless of apparent performance
