How Do I Read My Water Test Results?

A water test is just a list: each substance that was measured, how much of it was found, and the unit it was measured in. Reading it comes down to matching each result to its benchmark, separating the health items from the aesthetic ones, and grouping the findings by what treats them.

The U.S. EPA sets a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for the substances that affect health, so any result at or above its MCL is a priority. The health items (nitrate, arsenic, lead, uranium, PFAS, bacteria) should drive your decision; the aesthetic ones (hardness, taste, smell, staining, cloudiness) affect comfort and your plumbing but not your safety.

Grouping matters because one well-chosen treatment stage often handles several findings at once, and the order the stages run in matters too. Safety Before You Start

Do not make a health decision from a single questionable test. For any health contaminant (nitrate, arsenic, lead, uranium, PFAS, or bacteria), confirm the result with a state-accredited or certified laboratory before acting. Test strips and TDS meters are fine for a quick comfort read, but they are not reliable for health contaminants.

If your report shows bacteria (total coliform or E. coli), or nitrate at or above 10 mg/L, and there is an infant, a pregnant person, or someone immunocompromised in the home, treat it as urgent: stop using the water for drinking and infant formula, and contact your local health department or doctor. When in doubt about a result or the right fix, contact us or a licensed water-treatment professional rather than guessing.


Identify the Source and the Water Type

Note whether this is city/municipal water (treated, so expect chlorine or chloramine and you likely have a Consumer Confidence Report from your utility) or a private well (untreated, so expect hardness, iron, sulfur, nitrate, and sometimes bacteria or radiologicals).

City versus well changes which contaminants are even plausible. If you have no test at all and are unfamiliar with analyzing water quality, the first step is to get one; a strip or a meter is fine for a quick aesthetic read, but use an accredited lab for any health contaminant.


Read the Units Before the Numbers

The same value means very different things in different units:

  • ppm (parts per million) is the same as mg/L (milligrams per liter). This is the most common unit.
  • ppb (parts per billion) is the same as µg/L (micrograms per liter), and is 1,000 times smaller than ppm. Arsenic, lead, and uranium are usually reported here.
  • ppt (parts per trillion), or ng/L, is smaller still, and is how PFAS ("forever chemicals") are reported.
  • gpg (grains per gallon) is the hardness unit. Roughly, 1 gpg is about 17.1 ppm as calcium carbonate.
  • pH is a unitless 0 to 14 scale (7 is neutral; below 7 is acidic, above 7 is basic).
  • NTU measures turbidity (cloudiness from suspended particles).

Compare Each Result to Its Benchmark

Use the reference below. The EPA MCL is the neutral yardstick for health contaminants; the secondary (aesthetic) standards are comfort guidance, not health limits. Flag anything at or above its MCL as a priority and anything approaching it as a watch item.

Chlorine / chloramine ppm Secondary / disinfectant level, about 4 mg/L The municipal disinfectant. The most common city-water taste and odor complaint; chloramine is harder to remove than free chlorine.

Separate Health From Aesthetic

Anything with an MCL in bold above (nitrate, arsenic, uranium, lead, PFAS), plus any bacteria result (total coliform or E. coli), is a health priority and should drive your decision. Hardness, TDS taste, iron and manganese staining, sulfur smell, and turbidity are comfort and plumbing items; they are worth treating, but they are not a safety emergency.


Group the Findings by What Treats Them

You rarely need one device per contaminant. Described by function, common groupings are: chlorine, taste, and many metals handled by our carbon or redox stage; hardness handled by a softening or anti-scale stage; iron and manganese by an oxidation and dedicated metal-removal stage; high TDS by reverse osmosis with the membrane matched to your TDS; nitrate by a dedicated nitrate-selective stage; sediment and turbidity by graded pre-filtration ahead of everything else.

Sequencing matters: softening and pre-treatment usually go ahead of a reverse osmosis or a tannin stage.


When to Retest

Wells should be retested at least yearly, and sooner after flooding, a new nearby land use, or any change in taste, smell, or color. City water changes can be tracked through your utility's annual report.
