When to Replace Your Cartridge

Replace your shower filter cartridge:

  • Every 6–12 months depending on usage and water quality
  • When water flow decreases noticeably
  • If you notice chlorine smell returning to your shower water

Supplies Needed

  • New Crystal Quest shower filter cartridge
  • Towel (optional, to catch any drips)

Step-by-Step Replacement

Step 1: Remove the Filter Housing

Unscrew the filter housing portion where the shower head attaches (the side with a smaller male thread) by twisting it counterclockwise. Set the housing cap aside.

Step 2: Remove the Used Cartridge

Take out the used cartridge and dispose of it. You may notice discoloration, this is normal and can showcase the filter removing sediment or iron if applicable.

Step 3: Inspect the O-Rings

Before placing your cartridge inside or reassembling, check the O-rings on both sides of the interior of the housings. Make sure they are:

  • Seated properly in their grooves at the base
  • Free of cracks or damage
  • Clean and free of debris

Properly seated O-rings ensure a good seal and prevent leaks.

Step 3: Insert the New Cartridge

Grab your new Crystal Quest cartridge and slide the cylindrical cartridge in any orientation into place inside the housing.

Step 5: Reassemble the Housing

Screw the front of the filter housing back on by lining up the threads at the center seam and rotating clockwise. Tighten snugly, but do not overtighten, hand-tight is sufficient.

Step 6: Test for Leaks

Turn on the shower briefly and check around the housing for any drips. If you see leaks, turn off the water, remove the housing, and reseat the O-rings.

Step 7: Prime the Cartridge

Allow the shower to run anywhere from 5-15 minutes. You may notice the water is grey, black, cloudy, or otherwise discolored.

Do not be alarmed, this is normal and is caused by granular carbon fines or carbon dust being flushed away. While unsightly, this is not harmful and will easily be washed away.

Troubleshooting

Issue Solution
No/very little water flow Check that you removed the plastic wrapping from the new filter cartridge
Housing won't unscrew Wrap a rubber grip or towel around it for better grip
Water is black or discolored This is normal during priming, let the water run longer until it clears
Leaking after installation Remove housing and check that O-rings are seated properly
Leaking from middle seam of housing For persistent leaking at the center try applying Teflon tape to the middle threading where the two housing pieces connect
Leaking from shower head connection Recheck or reapply Teflon tape to the male threading where the shower head attaches
Low water pressure Ensure cartridge is fully seated in place and not blocking flow
Reduced flow Check that gaskets are properly in place. If you have multiple gaskets stacked, try removing one from either the shower head side or inlet side to increase flow
