How to Set Your Water Softener's Regeneration Time

Learn how to set or change your water softener's regeneration time so it runs overnight and never leaves you with hard or salty water.

Customer question

How do I set or change the time my water softener regenerates?

Answer

Set the correct current time of day on the control valve first, then set the regeneration start to an overnight low-use hour (commonly around 2:00 a.m.) and set the regeneration frequency to match your water hardness and household size. Here is how to do it. Because button layouts differ from one control valve to another, confirm the exact keystrokes in your unit's manual as you go.

Why this matters: a water softener uses ion-exchange resin that swaps hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) for sodium. Over time the resin fills up and must regenerate by rinsing with brine (salt water) drawn from the brine tank and then flushing. Soft water is not available to the house during the regeneration cycle, so regeneration is set to run automatically during low-use hours, usually in the early morning.

If regeneration runs while the household is using water, you can get hard, salty, or discolored water at the tap during the cycle. After a power outage, the control valve clock can reset, so the time of day may need to be re-entered or regeneration can land at the wrong hour.

Watch our youtube video below for a visual step-by-step:

Steps

  1. Set the correct CURRENT time of day on the control valve first. Many "wrong time" problems are simply a clock that reset after a power outage.
  2. Find the regeneration-time setting. It is often labeled regeneration time or "RT", or it lives in a program or settings menu.
  3. Set the regeneration start time to a low-use hour, commonly about 2:00 a.m.
  4. Set the regeneration frequency or capacity to match your water hardness and household size. A metered valve regenerates based on usage; a timer valve regenerates every set number of days. If you are unsure of your hardness, a water test gives you the number to program.
  5. Save and confirm the setting, then optionally run one manual regeneration to confirm the cycle completes and draws brine.
  6. After any power outage, re-check the time of day.

Exact button sequences differ from one control-valve model to another. Follow your unit's manual for the specific keystrokes. If your menu does not match the manual, contact support with your model.

Safety / before you start

  • Soft water is hard or unavailable during regeneration. Avoid drawing water for drinking, laundry, or appliances during the cycle, which is why an overnight start time is recommended.
  • Keep an eye on the salt level in the brine tank. The softener needs salt available to make brine and regenerate; if the tank runs low or empty, regeneration cannot work properly. Keep salt at the level described in your unit's manual and avoid letting it run out.
  • Do not interrupt a regeneration cycle once it is running unless your manual instructs otherwise.

When to contact support

Reach out to Crystal Quest support if:

  • Your control-valve menu differs from what the manual shows, so you cannot find the time or regeneration-time setting.
  • The unit will not draw brine when you run a manual regeneration.
  • You do not know your water hardness and need help getting a number to program.
  • The time keeps landing wrong after you have set it correctly, even outside of power outages. This can point to a failing valve or a weak backup battery.

When you contact support, please have your model on hand so we can match guidance to your exact control valve.
