How to Tell Which Size Water Filter Cartridge You Have (Without Measuring)
Learn how to identify your water filter cartridge size without measuring. Quick visual guide for 2.5x10, 2.5x20, 4.5x10 Big Blue, and 4.5x20 filters.
Choosing the correct replacement cartridge is essential for proper fit, performance, and leak prevention.
The good news? You usually don’t need a tape measure.
Most water filter cartridges can be identified in seconds simply by looking at their diameter (skinny vs wide) and height (short vs tall).
Step 1 - Check the Width (Slim vs Big Blue)
Slim (2.5-inch diameter)
-
Easy to grip with one hand
-
About the width of a soda can
-
Used in countertop, under-sink, and small systems
If it feels narrow and easy to hold, you have a 2.5" diameter cartridge.
Big Blue (4.5-inch diameter)
-
Much wider and heavier
-
You cannot fully wrap your hand around it
-
Used in whole house or high-flow systems
If it feels thick and oversized, you have a 4.5" (Big Blue) cartridge.
Step 2 - Check the Height (10" vs 20")
10-inch (Standard length)
-
Roughly the height of a sheet of paper
-
Most common residential size
-
Fits compact housings
20-inch (Extended length)
-
About twice as tall as a 10" cartridge
-
Holds more filter media
-
Lasts longer between replacements
If your cartridge looks or seems extra tall, it’s more than likely a 20-inch model.
Quick Size Identification Chart
| What it Looks Like | Cartridge Size | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| Small, skinny, easy to hold | 2.5" × 10" | Countertop, under-sink |
| Skinny but tall | 2.5" × 20" | Extended residential / pre-filter |
| Short but thick/wide | 4.5" × 10" (Big Blue) | Whole house / pre-filter |
| Thick and tall (largest) | 4.5" × 20" (Big Blue) | High-flow / large homes |
Industry Naming Notes (Important)
You may see different labels for the same sizes:
-
2.5" × 10" = 2-7/8" × 9-3/4"
-
2.5" × 20" = 2-7/8" × 20"
-
4.5" × 10" = 4-1/2" × 9-7/8" (Big Blue)
-
4.5" × 20" = 4-1/2" × 20" (Big Blue)
These are interchangeable industry terms and refer to the same physical dimensions.
Pro Tips from Crystal Quest
-
If your housing or system is called a “Big Blue,” you need a 4.5-inch diameter cartridge
-
Taller cartridges = longer service life
-
Wider cartridges = higher flow rates and lower pressure drop
-
When in doubt, check the model number printed on your cartridge labels
