Why Am I Having Issues After Replacing My Filters?
Minor issues like air in the lines, taste changes, or pressure fluctuations are normal after a filter change and typically resolve within a few days of use.
Replacing your filters is one of the best things you can do to maintain your water filter system. However, it's not uncommon to notice a few temporary changes right after installation. Most of these are perfectly normal and resolve on their own. Here's what you might expect and how to address any concerns.
Air in the Lines
Sputtering water or irregular flow immediately after a filter change is usually caused by air trapped in the system during installation. This is the most common post-replacement issue and is completely harmless.
- Run the water for 5-10 minutes to flush air from the lines
- If sputtering continues, turn the system off, wait a few minutes, then run the water again
- Air should clear within 24-48 hours of normal use
Changes in Water Taste or Odor
New filter media can sometimes produce a slightly different taste or faint odor during the break-in period. This is normal and indicates the fresh filtration media is activating.
- Flush the system according to your model's instructions (typically 10-20 gallons)
- Allow 1-3 days of regular use for the taste to normalize
- If unusual taste persists beyond a week, double-check that filters are correctly seated and the right model for your system
Pressure Changes
You may notice a slight difference in water pressure after installing new filters. A modest decrease is normal as fresh media offers more resistance than worn filters.
- Minor pressure reduction is expected and often improves after the initial break-in period
- Significant pressure loss may indicate an improperly seated filter or a clogged pre-filter
- Ensure all housings are hand-tightened securely but not over-tightened
Leaks Around Filter Housing
Leaks after filter replacement are typically caused by installation issues rather than defective parts. A quick check usually identifies the problem.
- Verify the O-ring is properly seated, clean, and lubricated with food-grade silicone grease
- Check that the filter is the correct size for your housing
- Ensure the housing is tightened evenly, snug but not forced
- Inspect the O-ring for cracks, debris, or damage and replace if needed
"Cloudy" or "Milky Water"
Water that appears cloudy immediately after a filter change is almost always caused by tiny air bubbles, not contamination. Fill a glass and watch it for a minute—if the cloudiness clears from the bottom up, it's simply air.
- Continue flushing the system to release trapped air
- Cloudiness from air bubbles should disappear within a few hours to a day
