Why Am I Getting Little or No Water After an Install or Filter Change?

When flow drops right after an install or a filter change, the cause is usually a valve or a bypass, not a failed part. The most common culprits are a shutoff or tank valve that was left closed (or only partly opened), and, on systems with an ultrafiltration (UF) capsule, a UF capsule that is restricting flow.

These are quick to check and cost nothing to fix. Work through the valve and bypass checks below before you assume a worn membrane or a defective cartridge; they are ordered easiest and most common first, so work top to bottom.

If flow is still low after the valves are confirmed fully open and the UF capsule is ruled out, then move on to the component-level reverse osmosis (RO) checks (clogged pre-filters, low tank air pressure, worn membrane), which are covered in the RO little-or-no-water KB article.


Safety Before You Start

  • Depressurize before opening any housing or changing a valve connection. Shut off the feed water and open a faucet or the system valve to relieve pressure.
  • Do not force a valve. If a valve will not move, stop and contact support rather than risk cracking a fitting.
  • This guide covers standard point-of-use and under-sink systems. Whole-house or commercial systems should be routed to Crystal Quest engineering rather than handled by trial and error.

1. Open Every Shutoff and Bypass Valve Fully

After an install or service, one closed or half-open valve will starve the whole system.

  • Confirm the feed-water shutoff is fully open.
  • Confirm any bypass valve is set to the in-service (not bypass) position.
  • On RO systems, confirm the storage-tank valve is fully open. A closed RO tank valve is a frequent cause of "no water at the faucet" right after service, because the tank cannot deliver its stored water with the valve shut.
  • Open each valve fully, not just partway, then check flow again.

2. Check the UF Capsule for Flow Restriction (Systems That Have One)

If your system includes a UF (ultrafiltration) capsule and flow is low, the capsule may be restricting it.

  • To test, temporarily bypass the UF capsule and see whether flow returns. If flow comes back with the capsule bypassed, the capsule is the restriction.
  • A capsule that restricts flow may need to be flushed per its instructions or replaced if it is at end of life. If you are not sure how to bypass or reconnect the capsule safely, contact support for a quick video-call walkthrough rather than guessing.

3. Confirm the Cartridges Are Seated and the Housings Are Tight

A cartridge that is not fully seated, or an O-ring pinched during a filter change, can restrict flow or cause a leak that drops pressure.

  • Depressurize, open the housing, re-seat the cartridge, inspect the O-ring, and reassemble snugly.
  • Run the system and check flow again.

4. Still Low? Move to the Component-Level RO Checks

If the valves are all fully open, the UF capsule is ruled out, and the cartridges are seated, the cause is more likely a clogged pre-filter, low storage-tank air pressure, or a worn membrane.
