New Filter Taste or Smell
A noticeable taste or smell from a new filter may be normal during initial use and should disappear after proper flushing and short-term use.
It’s common to notice a temporary taste or smell after installing a new water filter. In most cases, this is a normal part of the break-in process and does not indicate a problem with the filter or water quality.
These sensations typically resolve after the filter has been flushed and used for a short period.
Common Reasons for Taste or Smell With a New Filter
1. New Filter Break-In
New filtration media, especially activated carbon, may initially release:
-
A mild carbon or “new” smell
-
A neutral, earthy, or slightly unusual taste
This is normal, temporary, and is not harmful.
2. Incomplete Flushing
If a new filter has not been fully flushed or primed:
-
Residual air or harmless media fines may remain
-
Taste or odor may persist longer than expected
Following the recommended flushing/priming instructions can help remove these residuals quickly.
3. Removal of Familiar Water Compounds
When chlorine or chloramine is removed:
-
Water may smell or taste different than you’re used to
-
The absence of these compounds can be unusual at first
Many users adjust and prefer the new taste within a few days.
4. Reverse Osmosis and High-Purity Systems
Highly purified water can smell or taste different due to:
-
Very low dissolved solids
-
Reduced mineral content
This is expected and not a sign of malfunction.
What You Should Do
-
Prime/flush the system according to the product instructions
-
Run water through the filter for the recommended time or volume
-
Use the system normally for several days
-
Avoid judging taste immediately after installation
Most taste or smell concerns resolve on their own.
