Odor Appearing After Periods of Non-Use

An odor after water has been sitting unused is usually caused by stagnant water or downstream fixtures and typically clears after flushing.

Noticing an odor when you first run water after it has been unused for several hours or days is fairly common. In most cases, this is not a sign of contamination or a filtration problem.

This type of odor is usually related to stagnant water, plumbing components after the filter, or temporary interactions with air or materials, and it typically resolves quickly once fresh water begins flowing through the system.

Quick Overview

  • Odors after non-use are usually temporary

  • Commonly caused by stagnant water or fixtures after filtration

  • Flushing typically resolves the issue

  • Support is available if concerns persist

Common Reasons Odor May Appear After Non-Use

Stagnant Water in Plumbing or Fixtures

When water sits unused:

  • Dissolved gases can build up

  • Odors from plumbing materials may become more noticeable

  • Biofilm in faucet aerators or fixtures can contribute to smell

Once fresh water flows, these odors usually dissipate.

Final Delivery Components After Filtration

Even with a filtration system installed, water still passes through:

  • Faucets

  • Shutoff valves

  • Flexible supply lines

  • Aerators

Odors introduced at this stage occur after filtration and are not caused by the filter itself.

New System or Recently Replaced Filters

New systems or filters may temporarily retain air or residual compounds. If water sits unused during this break-in period, odors may be more noticeable until the system has been flushed and used regularly.

Environmental or Temperature Changes

Warm temperatures or long periods of non-use can intensify odors that are otherwise unnoticeable during normal daily operation.

Is This a Problem With the Filter?

In most cases, no. Odors that appear only after periods of non-use are rarely related to filter performance and are typically resolved by flushing the system.

What You Can Do to Resolve the Issue

  • Run cold water for several minutes to flush stagnant water

  • Clean faucet aerators if the odor is localized

  • Use the system regularly, especially after installation or filter changes

  • Flush the system according to product instructions if it has been unused for an extended period

Most odors clear quickly once normal water flow resumes.

When to Contact Crystal Quest Support
