Particles Visible in Filtered Water

Small particles in filtered water are often harmless and may occur during initial use, filter changes, or flushing, especially with new filtration media.

Seeing small particles or specks in filtered water can be concerning, but in many cases this is normal and temporary, particularly after installing a new filter or system.

These particles are often related to initial flushing, air release, or fine media dust and typically resolve with normal use.

Common Causes of Visible Particles

1. Initial Media Rinse or Break-In

Some filtration media may release fine, inert particles during the first few uses.

  • This is most common with new filters

  • Particles are usually flushed out quickly

  • Following flushing or priming instructions helps minimize this

2. Air Release & Microbubbles

Air trapped during installation can sometimes appear as:

  • Tiny white specks

  • Shimmering or floating particles

These are harmless air bubbles that dissipate on their own.

3. Disturbed Plumbing Sediment

Changing filters or installing a system can temporarily disturb existing plumbing:

  • Sediment in pipes may loosen

  • Particles may appear briefly

  • This typically clears after running water

4. Carbon Fines (When Applicable)

In some carbon-based filters, very small carbon particles (called carbon fines) may appear briefly:

  • They are not harmful

  • Usually black or gray in color

  • Flush the system until water runs clear

What to Do If You See Particles

  • Run water through the system as directed

  • Flush and/or prime according to product instructions

  • Allow a short break-in period

Most particle-related issues resolve quickly.
