Why Am I Experiencing Problems After Cleaning My System?
Post-cleaning issues are usually temporary and often resolve within a few hours of normal use as your system flushes residual cleaning solution and reestablishes proper water flow.
You've just completed a thorough cleaning or sanitization of your Crystal Quest system—great job maintaining your equipment! If you're noticing some unexpected changes, don't worry. Most post-cleaning issues are minor and easily resolved with a few simple steps.
Unusual Taste or Odor
A slight chemical or chlorine taste immediately after sanitization is completely normal. This occurs when trace amounts of cleaning solution remain in the system.
- Run water through the system for 5-10 minutes to flush any residual solution
- If using a carbon filter, allow extra time for the filter to neutralize remaining traces
- Taste should return to normal within 1-2 gallons of water flow
- If the taste persists after 24 hours of regular use, contact our support team
Air in the Lines
Sputtering, spurting, or inconsistent water flow after cleaning typically indicates air trapped in your system. This happens when water lines are drained during the cleaning process.
- Open your faucet fully and allow water to run for 2-3 minutes
- You may hear gurgling sounds as air escapes, this is normal
- For whole-house systems, open multiple fixtures to release air from different points
- Reverse osmosis systems may take 1-2 complete tank cycles to fully purge air
Leaks at Connection Points
If you disconnected any fittings during cleaning, small leaks may appear when reassembling. Check these common trouble spots:
- Filter housings: Ensure O-rings are properly seated and lubricated
- Tubing connections: Push tubing firmly into quick-connect fittings until you feel resistance
- Housing caps: Hand-tighten only, overtightening can damage threads or crack housings
- Drain line connections: Verify the drain saddle is secure and the air gap is clear if applicable
If a leak continues after re-checking connections, the O-ring may need replacement. Inspect for cracks, flattening, or debris.
Changes in Water Pressure
Noticing slower flow or pressure changes after cleaning can have several causes:
- Filter installed incorrectly: Double-check that filters are seated in the correct direction (look for flow arrows)
- Housing not fully closed: Ensure filter housings are completely tightened to create a proper seal
- Sediment dislodged: Cleaning can sometimes loosen debris that temporarily restricts flow
- Shut-off valve partially closed: Confirm inlet and outlet valves are fully open
System Won't Produce Water
If your system isn't producing any water after cleaning, work through this quick checklist:
- Verify the water supply valve is turned on
- Check that all tubing is reconnected and free of kinks
- For RO systems, ensure the storage tank valve is open
- Inspect for any crimped or pinched lines that may have occurred during reassembly
- Allow 2-4 hours for RO tanks to refill before expecting normal flow
When to Contact Crystal Quest Support
