What's The Difference Between SMART Plus, SMART Ultimate, and SMART Ultra?
SMART Ultimate lasts longer than SMART Plus, and SMART Ultra has the longest filtration media lifespan of all three.
The difference between SMART Plus, SMART Ultra, and SMART Ultimate is primarily the filtration capacity and lifespan of the cartridge — not the types of contaminants removed.
All three use the same SMART multi-media filtration technology, but they contain different amounts of ERA (Eagle Redox Alloy® / KDF® blends). As you move from SMART Plus → SMART Ultra → SMART Ultimate, the cartridge contains more ERA media, which allows it to treat more water over a longer period of time.
In simple terms:
-
SMART Plus – Standard lifespan and capacity, ideal for typical residential use
-
SMART Ultra – Longer lifespan than Plus, commonly chosen by households with higher daily usage or those who want fewer cartridge changes
-
SMART Ultimate – Longest lifespan and highest filtration capacity, best for customers who want maximum longevity and minimal maintenance
The increased amount of ERA media in the Ultra and Ultimate models does not add new contaminant categories, but it does allow the cartridge to:
-
Maintain performance over more total gallons
-
Handle higher usage more effectively
-
Provide more consistent filtration performance over time
Capacity comparison (varies by cartridge size):
-
SMART Ultra offers roughly 25–50% more capacity than SMART Plus
-
SMART Ultimate offers roughly 50–100% more capacity than SMART Plus
All capacity ratings are based on water hardness below 100 ppm and proper operating conditions.
How most customers choose:
-
SMART Plus for standard residential needs
-
SMART Ultra if you want longer life and fewer replacements
-
SMART Ultimate if you prefer the longest possible lifespan with the least maintenance
