How Do I Wire My Well-Pump Pressure Switch Safely, and What If It Has Failed?

Damaged Switch, or Intact but Wired Wrong?
- The switch looks or smells damaged (scorched contacts, melted housing, a burning smell, or it tripped/overheated). Stop using it. A switch that has overheated or shows any burn damage must not be reused, even if it still clicks. Disconnect power, take a photo, and contact support for the correct replacement. Do not try to clean and reinstall a burnt switch.
- The switch is intact but wired wrong (pump will not start or stop, or the wiring does not match what you expected). The reliable fix is to wire strictly to the switch's own terminal markings and your pump's diagram, not by wire color. The line (incoming power) leads land on the line terminals, and the leads going out to the pump motor land on the load terminals. Each switch is labeled; follow that label.
A practical note from the field: the two sides are easy to reverse. On many switches one pair of leads is the incoming power (the on/off side) and the other pair runs out to the pump motor. - If the switch is intact, read its terminal labels. Identify which terminals are the line (incoming power) side and which are the load (out to the pump motor) side. Go by the printed labels and your pump's diagram, not by wire color, because colors can vary.
- Confirm the leads are on the correct sides. The incoming power leads belong on the line terminals; the leads running to the pump motor belong on the load terminals. If they are reversed, the switch will not turn the pump on and off correctly. Move them to match the label.
- Make connections tight, restore power, and test a full cycle. Watch the pump cut in as pressure drops and cut out as pressure rises. Loose connections are a common cause of arcing and heat, so confirm every terminal is snug.
