What Are SMART Cartridges?
Crystal Quest SMART water filter cartridges use an advanced proprietary multi-media blend to reduce or remove a wide range of water contaminants.
SMART cartridges feature Crystal Quest's proprietary multi-stage filtration media blend, a carefully formulated combination of filtration technologies packed into a single cartridge.
Rather than relying on just one type of filter media, SMART cartridges combine multiple proven filtration materials to address a wider range of contaminants in one pass.
What's Inside a SMART Cartridge?
Each SMART cartridge contains Crystal Quest's signature house blend of filtration media:
Coconut Shell Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC)
Highly porous carbon that adsorbs chlorine, chloramines, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and chemicals that affect taste and odor.
Catalytic Carbon GAC
A specialized form of activated carbon with enhanced surface properties, particularly effective at breaking down chloramines—the disinfectant many municipalities now use instead of chlorine.
Eagle Redox Alloy® 6500 (Think KDF-55)
A copper-zinc formulation that reduces chlorine, heavy metals like lead and mercury, and inhibits bacterial growth within the filter.
Eagle Redox Alloy® 9500 (Think KDF-85)
A copper-zinc formulation optimized for reducing iron, hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell), and controlling scale buildup.
Ion Exchange Resin
Targets heavy metals and helps reduce hardness minerals through an ion exchange process.
White Ceramic Balls
Manufactured from mineral-rich ceramic materials including calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, zirconium dioxide, and silicon dioxide. These ceramic balls provide multiple filtration benefits:
- Adsorbs heavy metals and impurities
- Antibacterial and disinfecting properties
- Removes unpleasant odors
- Anti-oxidant properties
- Increases pH to create more alkaline water
Tourmaline Ceramic Balls
Tourmaline is a natural mineral with unique piezoelectric properties, it naturally generates a small positive charge. Crystal Quest tourmaline balls are formulated with hematite and contribute to water enhancement through:
- Emission of far-infrared rays and negative ions
- Supports a more alkaline pH balance
- Enhances the synergistic effects of the overall filtration media
Why Use a Multi-Media Blend?
Different contaminants require different filtration approaches. Chlorine responds well to carbon. Heavy metals need redox media, ion exchange, or ceramic adsorption. Hydrogen sulfide requires KDF-85 (Eagle Redox Alloy) specifically. Odors are addressed by both carbon and ceramic media.
By combining these technologies, SMART cartridges provide broader protection than single-media filters, without requiring you to install multiple separate cartridge stages.
The media work together synergistically, with each component contributing to overall water quality improvement.
When to Replace Your SMART Cartridge
SMART cartridges should be replaced based on your specific system's recommendations, typically every 12 to 24 months depending on usage and water quality. Signs it's time for a replacement include:
- Reduced water flow
- Return of chlorine taste or odor
- Reaching the gallon capacity listed for your cartridge
