What Water Pressure Do I Need for My Filtration System?

Understanding the pressure requirements that ensure optimal performance from your Crystal Quest water treatment system.

Why Water Pressure Matters

Your water filtration system relies on adequate pressure to function properly. Too little pressure means slow flow rates and incomplete filtration. Too much pressure can damage components and void your warranty. Taking a few minutes to verify your water pressure before installation saves time and ensures your system performs at its best.

Pressure Requirements by System Type

Countertop and Under-Sink Systems

  • Minimum pressure: 20 PSI
  • Maximum pressure: 60 PSI
  • Optimal range: ~40 PSI

Whole House Filtration Systems

  • Minimum pressure: 20 PSI
  • Maximum pressure: 60 PSI
  • Optimal range: ~40-50 PSI

Whole House Reverse Osmosis Systems

  • Minimum pressure: 40 PSI (for adequate production)
  • Maximum pressure: 60 PSI
  • Optimal range: ~50PSI

Note: RO systems are particularly sensitive to low pressure. Production rates drop significantly below 40 PSI.

How to Test Your Water Pressure

Using a Pressure Gauge

The most accurate method is using a water pressure gauge, available at most hardware stores for under $15.

  • Attach the gauge to an outdoor hose bib or washing machine connection
  • Ensure all other water fixtures in your home are turned off
  • Turn on the faucet fully and read the gauge
  • Test at different times of day, as pressure can fluctuate

Contact Your Water Utility

Your municipal water provider can often tell you the typical pressure for your area. Keep in mind that pressure at the street may differ from pressure inside your home.

What to Do If Pressure Is Too Low

If your water pressure falls below the minimum requirement, consider these solutions:

  • Check for leaks: Hidden leaks reduce overall system pressure
  • Inspect the pressure regulator: A faulty regulator may need adjustment or replacement
  • Clear clogged pipes: Mineral buildup restricts flow over time
  • Install a booster pump: For RO systems, a dedicated booster pump ensures adequate pressure for optimal production
  • Contact your water utility: Low municipal pressure may require a professional assessment

What to Do If Pressure Is Too High

Pressure exceeding 80 PSI poses risks to your plumbing and filtration equipment. High pressure solutions include:

  • Install a pressure reducing valve: This device regulates incoming pressure to a safe level
  • Adjust an existing pressure reducing valve: If you already have one, it may need calibration
  • Consult a licensed plumber: Persistent high pressure warrants professional evaluation

Important: Operating any filtration system above 80 PSI may cause leaks, component damage or failure, and will void your warranty.
