How Do I Know When It Is Time to Replace My Filters?

Use both a schedule and the signs: a general interval for each part, plus a few simple signs that tell you a filter is spent before the calendar does.

This is one of the most common maintenance questions we get. Filters do not fail all at once. They fill up gradually, so the goal is to change each part on a sensible schedule and to watch for the early signs that it is working harder than it should. T

wo things drive how fast a filter is used up: your water quality (how much it has to remove) and your usage (how much water you run through it). Heavier water or higher use means more frequent changes.


The Simple Version

Replace the parts that do the heavy lifting more often, replace the polishing and specialty parts on a yearly rhythm, and let the reliable signs (taste or odor coming back, a drop in pressure or flow, or a rising TDS reading on a reverse osmosis system) move a change up sooner. One part is the exception to "wait for a sign": a UV lamp should be replaced on schedule even while it still lights, because its disinfecting output fades invisibly before the lamp goes dark.

Safety When You Do Replace a Part

  • This article is about timing. When you actually change a cartridge, always depressurize first: turn off the water supply to the system and relieve the pressure at a downstream faucet or the housing's pressure-release button before you open any housing. Never open a housing under pressure.
  • For a UV system, turn the power off before opening the chamber, never look at a lit lamp, and handle the lamp by its ceramic ends only. Crystal Quest UV lamps are mercury free. However, if you are dealing with a UV lamp that does contain mercury, dispose of the used lamp as hazardous waste, not in regular trash.
  • Use only food-grade silicone lubricant on O-rings. Do not use petroleum jelly or cooking oils.

Typical Replacement Intervals

Use these general intervals as your baseline. These are typical ranges; your actual timing depends on your water quality and how much water you use.

Main drinking-water and polishing cartridges About every 12 to 24 months, averaging around 18

Whole-house specialty tank media (loose media, not a cartridge) Much longer than cartridges, often several years (for example, softener resin commonly lasts many years). Depending on the media or resin, we suggest 5-7 years for most medias, and 3-5 for specialty use cases or unique water conditions and usage

Signs It Is Time to Replace Sooner

Replace earlier than the interval if you notice any of these, because they mean the filter is reaching the end of its useful life:

  • The taste or odor the filter used to remove starts coming back (for example, a chlorine taste returning usually means the carbon is spent).
  • Water pressure or flow at the treated tap drops noticeably (a clogged pre-filter is the most common cause).
  • On an RO system, water production slows, TDS rises, or the taste changes.

On a Reverse Osmosis System, Use a TDS Meter Instead of the Calendar

A low-cost TDS meter is the most reliable way to judge an RO membrane. Measure the water going in (feed) and the finished water (product). A healthy membrane removes most of the dissolved solids. When that rejection falls off (TDS increases), production drops, or the system is about 3 years old, it is time for a new membrane. Note that cold water naturally slows RO output, so a winter slowdown is not always a fault.


Replace the UV Lamp on Schedule No Matter What

A UV lamp's disinfecting output weakens well before the lamp stops lighting, so "it still glows" is not a reason to keep it. Replace it about every 12 months (roughly 9,000 hours) and reset the lamp timer after the change. Check the quartz sleeve at the same time.


Track It So You Do Not Have to Guess

When you change a cartridge, put the date on the provided sticker located on the housing and set a calendar reminder for the next interval from the table above. Writing the install date on the filter is the easiest way to stay ahead of a change instead of reacting to a problem.
