Why Are My Plumbing Connections Leaking?

Leaks at plumbing connections are typically caused by loose fittings, worn O-rings, or improper sealing - most can be fixed in minutes with a simple fix.

Why Connection Leaks Happen

A small leak at plumbing connections is one of the most common issues customers encounter with water filtration systems. Whether you've just installed your water filtration system or it's been running smoothly for years, connection leaks can occur for a variety of reasons. Understanding why they happen will help you address the issue quickly and prevent water damage.

Loose or Improperly Sealed Fittings

The most frequent cause of connection leaks is simply a fitting that needs attention:

  • Insufficient tightening - fittings may not have been fully secured during installation
  • Vibration loosening - water pressure over time can gradually loosen connections
  • Missing or incorrect thread seal tape - tape should be wrapped clockwise, 3-5 times around threaded connections
  • Cross-threaded fittings - connections forced onto threads at an angle won't seal properly

Worn Seals and O-Rings

Rubber components naturally wear over time and may need replacement:

  • Dried or cracked O-rings - rubber can deteriorate after extended use
  • Compressed or deformed washers - these lose their ability to create a tight seal
  • Missing components - O-rings or washers sometimes get lost during filter changes
  • Improperly Seated O-rings - O-rings can move out of their correct position, most common when cartridges have been replaced or a sump has been opened

Pressure and Temperature Effects

Environmental factors can stress your connections over time. High water pressure, sudden pressure changes (water hammer), and temperature fluctuations from hot and cold water cycling all contribute to connection fatigue and potential leaks.

How to Fix the Leak

Follow these steps to address the issue:

  • Turn off the water supply to the filtration system before inspecting
  • Dry the area and place a towel beneath the connection to pinpoint the exact leak source
  • Check fitting tightness - hand-tighten first, then use a wrench for a gentle quarter-turn if needed
  • Inspect thread seal tape - if inadequate, disconnect, clean threads, and reapply 3-5 wraps clockwise
  • Examine O-rings and washers - replace any that show wear, cracking, or damage
  • Look for cracks - check fittings for damage from over-tightening
  • Turn water back on slowly and observe the connection for continued leaking

Important: Avoid over-tightening components, as this can cause cracking and make the problem worse.
