Why Do I Hear Clicking or Knocking Sounds?

Clicking and knocking noises from your water treatment system are usually normal - caused by valve cycling, regeneration, or water pressure changes.

Clicking, knocking, or tapping noises are a common question, and in most cases, they're completely normal parts of system operation.

What Causes These Sounds

Understanding the source of these noises can give you peace of mind and help you identify the rare situations that may need attention.

Valve Cycling and Regeneration

Automatic backwash systems and water softeners use control valves that cycle during regeneration. Clicking sounds often indicate the valve is moving through its programmed stages. This typically occurs during preset regeneration times, often overnight.

Water Hammer Effect

A sudden stop or change in water flow can create a knocking or banging sound. This happens when fast-closing valves shut off quickly, causing pressure waves in the pipes. It's common when appliances like washing machines or dishwashers stop filling.

Solenoid Valve Operation

Electronic solenoid valves produce a distinct clicking sound when opening or closing. This is normal behavior for systems with automatic shut-off features, and you may hear it when water demand starts or stops.

Air in the Lines

Air trapped in pipes or the system can cause knocking or sputtering sounds. This often occurs after initial installation, filter changes, or if the system has been off. It usually resolves on its own as air purges through normal water use.

Pressure Fluctuations

Changes in municipal water pressure can cause intermittent knocking. Expansion and contraction of system components due to temperature changes may also produce sounds, often more noticeable during peak water usage times in your area.

What You Should Do

  • Listen and observe — note when the sounds occur (time of day, during water use, or at rest)
  • Check regeneration schedules — sounds occurring at the same time daily are likely tied to normal regeneration cycles
  • Inspect visible connections — ensure all fittings are secure and there are no visible leaks
  • Run water briefly — if you suspect air in the lines, run a faucet for 2-3 minutes to help purge trapped air
  • Review your system manual — familiarize yourself with your specific model's normal operating sounds

When to Contact Support

While most clicking and knocking sounds are harmless, reach out to our support team if you experience:

  • Loud, persistent banging that doesn't resolve within a few days
  • Sounds accompanied by leaks, reduced water pressure, or water quality changes
  • Clicking that occurs continuously rather than intermittently
  • New sounds that started suddenly after years of quiet operation
  • Any noise combined with error codes or warning lights on your system

Quick Summary

  • Clicking and knocking sounds are usually normal system operations
  • Common causes include valve cycling, water hammer, solenoid operation, and air in lines
  • Sounds during regeneration cycles are expected and indicate your system is working properly
  • Monitor for changes in frequency, intensity, or accompanying issues
