Why Does My Water Taste or Look Different on Day One?
Noticing changes in your water right after installation is completely normal. Here's what to expect and when to call us.
Normal Taste Changes
Your water may taste different immediately after your water filtration system is installed. This is expected and typically resolves quickly.
Carbon Taste
A slight mineral or carbon taste during the first few glasses is common. This occurs as your new carbon filter media settles in. Flushing the system for 5-10 minutes usually eliminates this taste entirely.
Absence of Chlorine
If you've been drinking municipal tap water, you may notice your water now tastes "flat" or different. This is actually a good sign, your system is removing the chlorine you've grown accustomed to. Most customers quickly prefer this cleaner, more natural taste.
Normal Appearance Changes
Visual changes in your water are also common during the first day. These are harmless and temporary.
Cloudy or Milky Water
Water that appears cloudy or milky is almost always caused by tiny air bubbles trapped during installation. Fill a glass and watch it for 30 seconds, if it clears from the bottom up, it's simply air. This is completely safe to drink and will resolve within a few hours to a day.
Carbon Fines
You may notice small black specks or a grayish tint in your water initially. These are carbon fines, microscopic particles from the new filter media. They are non-toxic and will flush out completely within the first day of normal use.
How Long Do These Changes Last?
- Carbon taste: Usually gone after 5-10 minutes of flushing
- Air bubbles (cloudy water): Typically clears within 24 hours
- Carbon fines: Should disappear within 1 day of regular use
- Chlorine-free taste adjustment: Most people adapt within a few days
When Something Is NOT Normal
While most day-one changes are expected, certain signs warrant a call to our support team:
- Persistent discoloration that doesn't clear after 48 hours
- Strong chemical or unusual odors that persist after flushing
- Visible sediment or particles other than fine carbon specks
- Water that remains cloudy and doesn't clear from the bottom up
