Why Is My Pump Noisy When the Tank Fills?

Some pump noise during tank fill is normal. Learn which sounds indicate proper operation and which may need attention.

Understanding what you're hearing can help you tell the difference between everything working correctly and something that may need attention.

Normal Operating Sounds

These sounds are typical and not a cause for concern:

  • Steady humming or buzzing - indicates the pump motor is running properly
  • Slight vibration - normal during active filtration
  • Clicking when pump starts or stops - the check valve preventing backflow

Why Your Pump Makes Noise

When your Crystal Quest reverse osmosis filtration system fills its storage tank, the pump pushes water through the membrane and into the tank. This process naturally produces sounds that many customers notice, especially in quieter environments or after initial installation. Most pump noises are completely normal and indicate your system is functioning as designed.

Air in the System

Gurgling or sputtering noises often occur after filter changes or initial installation. Air pockets moving through the lines create intermittent sounds that typically resolve within the first few tank fill cycles.

Water Pressure and Tank Pressure

Changes in your home's incoming water pressure can affect pump operation. Low pressure makes the pump work harder, producing louder sounds. If the storage tank's air pressure is too low or too high, the pump may run longer or cycle irregularly, resulting in prolonged or unusual sounds during filling.

Simple Steps to Reduce Noise

  • Check for vibration sources - ensure tubing isn't touching walls, cabinets, or other surfaces that could amplify sound
  • Verify connections - confirm all fittings are secure and the system is level
  • Allow time for air to clear - give a newly installed or serviced system 2-3 complete fill cycles
  • Monitor water production - if flow and quality remain normal, occasional sounds are typically not a concern
